TSSA Press Statement on Southgate Station explosion

19 June 2018

Responding to news of the explosion at Southgate Station earlier this evening, TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes said,

“Our thoughts are with those caught up in this incident and their loved ones. It's too early to speculate on what exactly happened but thankfully there appear to be no major injuries or loss of life.

“I want to pay tribute to our brave tube workers, who lead evacuation procedures and of course, they are joined in their endeavours by our courageous British Transport Police staff, who run against fleeing passengers into the danger zone. They are all a vital part of London’s security net.

“Our Union takes its lessons from our emergency services in incidents like these. However, in the morning, we will begin conducting our own safety audit to see if our members analysis of what happened requires us to learn lessons from tonight’s incident.”
