TSSA respond to Hitachi plans to grow a diverse workforce in Doncaster

11 April 2017

TSSA leader Manuel Cortes responds to Hitachi Rail Europe (HRE)'s plans to ensure they have a future diverse workforce to employ for their Doncaster maintenance depot.

General Secretary Manuel Cortes said,
"Hitachi's plans to bring immediate 250 jobs to Doncaster are welcome. And their plans to grow their own future workforce in the area by inspiring a new generation of rail workers from diverse backgrounds - with an emphasis on women is especially welcome.
"We are delighted that they say they want to actively engage with schools and colleges to demonstrate the wide-range of opportunities available in the rail industry and promote STEM subjects to girls.  To get the venture off the ground and to keep it running, TSSA would be happy to partner any  local initiatives to promote women into the rail industry and especially rail engineering initiatives and will now seek to explore opportunities with HRE in Doncaster.
"Women currently number just 4% of the total number of engineers in the trail industry and we would like them to join us in pressing the government of the case to ensure that women have access to engineering qualifications via sponsorship schemes so women can compete on an equal footing for all rail jobs"
