TSSA Seeks Urgent Thomas Cook Meeting and Jobs Guarantees

12 July 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has said the union is seeking an urgent meeting with Thomas Cook and is demanding guarantees on jobs after it emerged the travel company is in £750m rescue talks with banks and its largest shareholder, Fosun.

Talks with the Chinese company are over a deal which would effectively hand Fosun control of the high street giant.

Cortes said: “Our members have been having a terrible time over the last few months with all the uncertainty surrounding the future of Thomas Cook and of course, potentially their jobs.

“We would resist any breakup of Thomas Cook which would be detrimental to jobs but also the High Street as whole.”

“We will be seeking an urgent meeting with Thomas Cook to discuss the latest developments. We need guarantees that our members’ jobs are safe.

“It’s hard to believe that our members who are often in low-paid roles would end up paying a very heavy price for Brexit when the likes of arch-leavers like James Dyson simply jump our sinking British ship and move to Singapore.”
