TSSA Statement on Caledonia Sleeper Brakes Failure

12 August 2019

TSSA has called for speedy action after the Rail Accident Investigation Branch found a closed break valve was to blame for the overrun at Edinburgh Waverly by a Caledonian Sleeper train on 1st August.

The train stopped 650 metres beyond its intended stopping point.

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes said “Only sheer good luck and the quick thinking of the Train Manager saved the passengers on the morning of August 1st. We cannot rely on luck to keep passengers safe.

“The failure of the brakes could have led to a catastrophic accident. We need to find out as soon as possible what led to the brakes valve not being opened and then act to put in place whatever is needed for this not to happen again.”
