TSSA & Stonewall join forces

23 February 2017

TSSA is making history by becoming Britain's first trade union to join lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights charity, Stonewall's Diversity Champion programme in LGBT history month.

Stonewall's scheme promotes equality for LGBT people in their workplace as a best practice sharing forum in which partner organisations receive support from LGBT equality charity Stonewall, with the aim of creating a fully inclusive workplace and service.

TSSA is truly proud to work with Stonewall to pilot the scheme both as an employer and, as a trades union committed to inclusion and acceptance of LGBT members in both their workplaces and our communities.

Said TSSA Organising Director, Nadine Rae

"TSSA completely agrees with Stonewall's campaign to promote diverse workplaces in which everyone can be themselves so, it's a no-brainer for us to collaborate with them to promote LGBT inclusion opening up our own practices as an employer to scrutiny. But it's great to making history with Stonewall in LGBT history month.

"We welcome Stonewall's Diversity Champion campaigners who are now set to work with our own internal staff to see whether there is anything we could do better or, differently as an employer to support and better enable our own LGBT staff.

"But excitingly, our new pilot scheme will allow us to work together to develop best practice policies for the wider union movement, to drive forward LGBT agenda and our members right to be included and accepted in their workplaces as themselves. In developing our own best practice as an employer we will be will be even better-placed to influence LGBT bargaining agendas in the workplace."

Said TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes:

"TSSA is committed to diversity and we strongly believe that the best workplaces are those were people feel accepted and included. In other words equal. It's an honour and a privilege to be partnering Stonewall to pilot their scheme with the trade union movement. I look forward to the results of our collaboration and the positive difference this joint venture will make to promoting workplace diversity and equality for our members".

Said Duncan Bradshaw, Director of Membership Programmes, Stonewall:

“It’s fantastic news that the TSSA has joined the Stonewall Diversity Champions programme to advance LGBT inclusion in their work. We are delighted to know that TSSA has taken a strong commitment to LGBT equality and look forward to working with them to create more inclusive environments for their staff and members – working towards a world where all lesbian, gay, bi and trans people are accepted without exception.”
