TSSA Welcomes HS2 Preston Jobs Boost

19 June 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has welcomed a report showing Preston is in line for a huge boost in jobs and economic growth as a result of High Speed 2 (HS2).

The study suggests more than 11,000 jobs would be created in the Lancashire city if it moves to make the most of the HS2 rail link in the coming decades.

High speed trains will join the current West Coast Mainline south of Wigan and continue up to Scotland – passing through Preston as mainline services do today.

The Lancashire Enterprise Partnership – which commissioned the study – heard that 11,100 jobs could be created by 2050 – within a 1km radius of Preston station.

Manuel Cortes said: “This is very welcome news for Preston and shows HS2 has the capacity to put rocket boosters under the regional economy across Lancashire and beyond.

“Our union has signed a recognition agreement with HS2 so we are clear the high speed rail links will create thousands of additional jobs, better connect cities and unleash the economic potential across the North.

“HS2 is an essential pillar of our country's modernisation and will be vital in assisting local authorities and business in the rebalancing of Britain’s economy.

“We need HS2 to run a spine the length of Britain - delivering 21st Century transport links which will reboot our economy and grow future jobs beyond the rail sector - and beyond the south east.
