TSSA Welcomes 'Massive Step Forward' By Jeremy Corbyn On Brexit

29 May 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has welcomed as a "massive step forward" Jeremy Corbyn's commitment tonight to holding a public vote on any Brexit deal.

Speaking this evening ahead of meetings with senior Irish politicians in Dublin, the Labour leader said: “the only way out of the Brexit crisis ripping our country apart is now to go back to the people.”

Mr Corbyn also made it clear “the people” should decide the UK’s future “either through a general election or a public vote.”

In response Manuel Cortes said: “We really welcome Jeremy's unequivocal commitment to a public vote on any Brexit deal in the absence of a general election and doing whatever it takes to stop a no-deal Brexit.

“This is a massive step forward for our Party which will delight our members and voters alike.

“However, in the interest of straight-talking politics, we also need to clearly spell out that Labour will campaign in favour of Remain in any public vote and, should we get into government before that time, we will remain committed to giving the people of our country the final say on Brexit.”
