TSSA Welcomes Metro Mayors No Confidence Vote In Northern

29 May 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has welcomed a call from the Mayors of Greater Manchester and the Liverpool City Region to terminate Northern's rail franchise.

Cortes described the move by Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram as a “vote of no confidence in an operator which has consistently offered an unacceptable third-rate service.”

The two Mayors have called on the Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, to terminate the franchise as soon as possible.

They say that from December 2018 to April 2019 - 1/5 of all services were late, almost 30,000 trains cancelled and there was a near 50 per cent rise in the number of services with reduced carriages.

The figures come a year after the widespread timetable chaos of May 2018 across the Northern franchise.

Manuel Cortes said: “This is a great move by the two Metro Mayors who are speaking on behalf of nearly four and half million people.

“Their words clearly amount to a vote of no confidence in an operator which has consistently offered an unacceptable third-rate service and brought nothing but sustained misery to those using our railways.

“Northern Rail is barely functioning and passengers deserve so much better. These services must be brought back into public ownership now. Failing Grayling would be wise to listen on this occasion and do the right thing; but I won’t hold my breath.”
