TSSA Welcomes MPs Inquiry Into Thomas Cook Collapse

27 September 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has welcomed the announcement of a wide-ranging Parliamentary inquiry into the collapse of Thomas Cook.

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has welcomed the announcement of a wide-ranging Parliamentary inquiry into the collapse of Thomas Cook.

The move – from the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee (BEIS) – comes after Cortes wrote to the Chair, Raches Reeves, asking why the British Government had sat on its hands when help was available.

Manuel Cortes said: “Our union fully welcomes and backs this inquiry. Not only bosses but Ministers must be held to account for their actions in needlessly allowing Thomas Cook to go to the wall and with it 9000 jobs.

“I’d encourage the Committee to leave no stone unturned as our members deserve answers into the Government’s whole approach to this matter.

“I’ve told Ministers that Thomas Cook has a strong brand recognition, and that they must seek to determine which parts of the business could move forward as a going concern.

“The inescapable fact is the Chinese investor Fosun was confident enough in Thomas Cook’s future to put in £450m. Not only that, there has been no denials that the Spanish and Turkish governments were ready to step in, only to be blocked by our own Government.

“Thomas Cook employees and the British public deserve to know the truth and I have no doubt the BEIS inquiry will be of great assistance.”
