Virgin Profits a Kick in the Teeth for Rail Passengers

17 August 2011

TSSA leader Gerry Doherty has attacked Virgin profits describing them as "a real kick in the teeth" for millions of passengers.

The bumper profits were announced the day after passengers were told they face 25% fare increases over the next three years.

He said: "Rail passengers will be simply astounded that Virgin has literally been given a licence to print money at their expense.

"Here we have two of the country's richest men, Sir Richardr Branson and Sir Brian Souter sharing profits of £39 million, after paying the Government a thumping £110 million, being told they can carry on ripping off passengers by charging them an extra 25% in fares over the next three years.

"This is the economics of the madhouse whereby the government and private companies benefit at the expense of hard working families.

"The private rail industry is a lottery in which the passenger always loses. It is rigged in favour of the government and the train operators."
