Virgin Trains East Coast: 2015 Pay Referendum

26 June 2015

Members at Virgin Trains East Coast are being urged to reject the Company's “full and final” 2015 pay offer for non-management staff in the current referendum which closes on 9 July, and to demonstrate their support for an industrial action ballot if necessary.

The full detail of the offer is as follows:

  • 2% increase on basic earnings implemented with effect from Sunday 29 March 2015
  • An increase to the current Maternity (for women whose due date is on or after the 1 June 2015) and Paternity (if your child is due on or after the 1 June 2015) provisions as follows:
    • Maternity: Weeks 1-12 at basic earnings, Weeks 13-24 at half basic earnings or SMP whichever is the greater, weeks 25-39 SMP, weeks 40-52 zero pay
    • Paternity: Two weeks at basic earnings

Over the past few weeks we have tried without success to engage with the Company further in an effort to avoid a dispute situation. We have already raised our concerns at the way in which this year’s pay negotiations were conducted, culminating in the above “full and final” offer being sent to us in writing, thereby denying us the opportunity to seek any further change or clarification. As a result of this a number of significant issues remain unresolved, including the offer’s failure to address the ever-widening pay gap for low paid staff, and that the offer appears to apply to “basic earnings” only and not to any allowances. We are therefore unable to recommend the offer to members and would encourage them to reject it and send a clear message to the Company that TSSA members expect and deserve better.

If you work for Virgin Trains East Coast and require any further information please contact your staff reps in the first instance. Please also discuss the contents of this circular with your colleagues, and encourage any non-members to join. The more members we have, the stronger our negotiating position becomes. Membership application forms can be obtained from your TSSA reps or you can join on-line by clicking here.
