Virgin Trains East Coast: 2017 Pay Settlement

Following the overwhelming rejection of the Company's full and final pay offer by members in the recent referendum, a further meeting was held on Tuesday 17th October in an effort to reach agreement and avoid a dispute. At this meeting the Company agreed to abandon its contentious proposal to introduce new contracts with reduced sick pay benefits, and agreed to a minimum increase of £600 to boost the pay of the lowest paid employees. The full detail of the revised two-year offer is as follows:

 

Year One:

An increase of 3.2% on basic pay and associated allowances effective from Sunday 26th March 2017, or a minimum payment of £600 (whichever being the greater for full time equivalent – pro-rated as appropriate) and subject to the following productivity commitments;

  • Revision to the current sickness absence pay year, introducing a rolling 12 month period applicable to all employees.
  • A joint commitment to the use of mobile technology.
  • A joint review of the current attendance management arrangements.

Year Two:

An increase equivalent to RPI (February 2018) payable with effect from Sunday 1st April 2018.

 

This is a remarkable result under the circumstances, and was only made possible by TSSA members rejecting the original proposal and uniting behind your negotiating team. The Company did not expect this backlash from staff, and wrongly believed you would accept whatever they proposed irrespective of your negotiating team’s recommendation. Thanks to our unity, we now have an offer which protects your income against currently rising inflation for two years, removes the threat to your terms and conditions, and gives a welcome pay boost to the lowest paid staff. Your negotiating team believes this is the best possible negotiated settlement, and we therefore recommend it for your acceptance.
