Virgin Trains East Coast: Customer Zones Update

7 February 2018

An "avoidance of dispute" meeting took place yesterday with the General Secretary and senior Company representatives present to discuss our concerns over the Company's implementation of Customer Zones, and their recent disregard for the formal consultation and negotiation procedures.

TSSA has been clear from the outset of the Customer Zones project that our primary concerns are to ensure long-term future employment prospects and guarantee the safety and security of our members’ in their working environment. Over the last few weeks it became clear that elements within the Company were moving ahead with plans which had never been discussed with your reps at Travel Centres Company Council (TCCC), and for which there was no agreement. We also expressed concerns over the current cash handling system being trialled in York, and stressed that we would not accept a situation where our members were put in a vulnerable position. In response, the Company accepted there had been failures in the consultation and negotiation process and that the cash handling system being trialled was far from ideal. It was therefore agreed to schedule a special TCCC meeting as soon as possible to address our concerns and get discussions back on track.

We remain hopeful that we can reach a more comprehensive agreement with the Company on a way forwards, but we will not compromise the safety of our members or allow the formal consultation and negotiation procedures to be bypassed. We will of course keep you updated of any further developments.
