Virgin West Coast Franchise

15 August 2012

Today's announcement that First Group will take over the West Coast franchise from Virgin Trains highlights the madness of the privatised railway where greed comes before staff and passenger needs alike.

But, while train operators come and go, TSSA has been defending our members’ interests for nearly 120 years. We will continue to do so, whoever the employer.

There has already been much media speculation about First’s plans for the West Coast franchise. TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has written to First Group boss, Tim O’Toole, requesting a personal meeting to clarify the situation. We want to deal with the facts rather than engaging in scaremongering or guesswork.

Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations

The TUPE Regulations mean that your existing contracts of employment and collective bargaining rights will transfer from Virgin to First.

The Regulations stipulate that meaningful consultation over the transfer must take place with your Trade Union. We will be writing to both Virgin and First to remind them of their legal obligations and to request comprehensive assurances over jobs and services.

TSSA will keep you fully informed throughout the consultation period and seek arrangements for staff forums for you to air your views directly with your Reps.

There are bound to be all sorts of rumours circulating at a time of uncertainty and worry for many of our members. Your TSSA Reps are committed to giving you the very best information and advice possible.
