Young persons railcard announcement

22 November 2017

Responding to news that the chancellor has today extended the young persons railcard to 26-30 year olds, TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes said,

“This sounds good but in practice it will do little to help hard pressed young rail commuters given the types of tickets it can be used for and the restrictions that come with it. It won’t make their peak hour journeys any cheaper and it doesn't discount season tickets and has a £12 minimum fare for any journey before 10am Monday to Friday. In fact the Young Person Railcard website the YPR is still making it quite clear that if you are under 30 and travel regularly before 10am that you're probably better getting a season ticket.”
