C2C Rep Elections - Want to become a TSSA rep?

29 November 2018

TSSA workplace reps make a vital contribution to our union. What we expect from workplace reps is enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in achieving real change for members at work.

TSSA workplace reps are usually the first and main point of contact for many members. As such we ask reps to present the professional face of our union, to uphold TSSA’s commitment to equal opportunities and diversity and to represent members’ interests to the best of their ability. Sometimes this can be a difficult task but, it is equally rewarding winning positive change for members.

TSSA’s commitment to reps: To ensure workplace reps have the skills and confidence needed to do their job our union provides a professional training programme covering everything from recruitment and union organising to learning about employment rights, safety and wellbeing in the workplace, TSSA’s equality agenda and collective bargaining. TSSA’s paid officials are there to help support and mentor all workplace reps ensuring they receive information and advice.

Principal role of TSSA reps

  • There are 5 principal types of reps currently up for election in C2C which elected candidates will serve for a 3-year term:
  • Health and Safety Reps: Health and safety reps have specific rights and duties under health and safety legislation and play an important role in their workplace on safety and wellbeing.
  • Union Learning reps (ULRs): Have specific legal rights allowing them to organise around promoting, supporting, and even initiating, professional & personal development for members across their workplace.
  • Equality reps: Champions for equality they are dedicated to driving TSSA’s equality agenda who have access to our education programme including specialist training on topics such as equality and discrimination, Neurodiversity and LGBT+ rights.
  • Pensions reps: Trained pensions reps who can access general and specialist training to help represent members’ pension interests across their workplace.
  • Company level reps: They do the day-to-day work of negotiating with management, talking to members in relation to company-wide issues such as pay and conditions. Company council reps are certified by TSSA officers to undertake certain tasks such as representing members at disciplinary and grievance cases as well as leading in matters dealt with under collective bargaining.
