Coronavirus Transport Summit "Vital" Within Days - TSSA

9 March 2020

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has said it's vital the Government convene a summit by the end of this week looking at measures to stop the spread of Coronavirus across public transport networks.

The comments follow an emergency COBRA meeting chaired by Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, at which it was decided the UK would remain in the ‘containment’ stage of its response to the Coronavirus.

Plans to delay the virus's spread with ‘social distancing’ measures will not be introduced yet, Ministers said.

The union boss recently wrote to Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, calling for a coordinated response across the public transport network on how we tackle the virus.

Commenting after the Downing Street briefing Cortes said: “It is clear after today’s COBRA meeting that we are only days away from the Government starting to implement a delay strategy to try to stop the spread of Coronavirus.

“I wrote to the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, requesting a summit so that all the leading public transport stakeholders could come together to devise strategies to help delay the spread of the virus and ensure that our transport networks continue to operate and are resilient to any epidemic.

“It is now vital the Transport Secretary takes up my call and convenes a summit by no later than the end of this week.”
