Cortes slams as 'grotesque' figures on rail privatisation

5 November 2018

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has described as 'grotesque' and 'an affront' figures released today marking the 25th anniversary of legislation privatising British Rail.

Figures obtained by the Labour Party show government direct subsidy to the railways is around £5bn per year – an increase of over 200 per cent over the past quarter century.

An additional £4.1bn per year in public money is also being pumped into the railways as increased debt for network rail.

On top of all that fares are shown to be 20 per cent higher in real terms.

Commenting, Manuel Cortes said: “The public will see these shocking figures for what they are – an affront to every taxpayer in the country, to every family, to every child and to every rail passenger.

“Today we see the brutal reality of Tory ideology - the privatisation of our railways has been both grand folly and a grotesque waste of public money.

“Rightly there is now overwhelming support for the railways to return to public hands. The public in their millions know that privatisation is a failure.

“‘Failing’ Chris Grayling should now act without delay and return the railways to public hands, in the interests of passengers rather than profit.”
