Northern Flash Sale - Gimmick Won't Fool Public

7 January 2020

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has said the travelling public "won't be fooled" by Northern Rail's 'flash sale' of tickets at 10p a head.

Northern has been under pressure for months with speculation growing about the future of the franchise which has seen major problems since the widespread chaos across the North of England in the Spring of 2018.

Cancellations remain commonplace - in October last year fewer than half the company’s services ran on time - and in recent weeks new timetables have sparked further problems.

The operator – which runs services across the North including from Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and York, as well as Cumbria – says from today it will offer 10p Advance train tickets (5p for kids) between 13 Jan-14 Feb and 24-29 Feb.

Commenting, Cortes said: “Northern have a cheek trying to hoodwink commuters with this gratuitous gimmick. The public simply won’t be fooled by this nonsense which comes only a few days after yet another disgraceful hike in rail fares across the network.

“If Northern think they can get around the real anger people feel across the North about what they have to endure on a daily basis because of this failing franchise then they had better think again.

“Northern is a basket case which must come under public control without further delay. The only way to turn this mess around is to create a system in our country which works for passengers rather than profiteers.”
