Rail shake up plans a Mad Christmas Spoof - Cortes

18 December 2018

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has dismissed plans to allow train operators to compete directly against established franchise holders as "completely mad."

The changes, slated for next May, are billed as allowing long-suffering passengers a choice in who they travel with, pitting operators directly against each another.

However the plans, from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) drew a stinging rebuke from Cortes, who said: “This sounds completely mad. You can’t run two trains on the same bit of track at the same time.

“One of the biggest issues causing and deepening delays is congestion. Running yet more trains will just increase the problem.

“Frankly this looks like a spoof or someone giving a quote after a long Christmas work’s do.

“The only fix for our railways is to put them back into public hands, so let’s have no more tinkering around the edges of a broken and bust system.”
