Response to NAO report on cost of modernising Great Western Railway

9 November 2016

Responding to the National Audit Office report into the modernising costs of the Great Western Railway, TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes said:

"The big figure to grasp in these National Audit Office figures is the 81% growth in passenger numbers since 2013. That's an enormous figure which tells you there is a huge need - and a huge social need - for the expansion of our railways.

"In the eighties Norman Tebbit told people to get on their bikes to search for work. These days people take the train - and are made to pay through the nose for it. The profits to be made from British passengers is why so many foreign rail companies are scrambling to get a piece of the Britain's rail action.

"If we took back the companies who operate the rail carriages into public ownership, we could invest passenger fares back into our own people's railway and stop fares being creamed off as profits to subsidise the running of the railways in Germany, France, Holland and China."
