TSSA Annual Delegate Conference 2020 Cancelled

21 May 2020

You will be aware from previous communications that our Executive Committee (EC) had decided to suspend our Annual Delegate Conference scheduled for June this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic (Circular 48/20 and 53/20 reported).

Our Executive Committee this week discussed the significant logistical difficulties involved in re-arranging our Conference for later in the year and regretfully agreed that there was little alternative other than to cancel the event.

The agreed processes for a November Conference would need to begin before the end of this month. With a large proportion of our TSSA members and activists either on furlough or working from home, rules around social distancing curtailing the ability of branches to meet and no possibility of us being able to book a Conference venue in the foreseeable future, organising a successful Conference became almost impossible.

Our Rule Book requires each year that our Treasurer will present the Executive Committee’s Report, and Accounts and Balance Sheet at our Annual Delegate Conference and make a statement on our union's financial position. As there will not now be an Annual Delegate Conference in 2020 the democratic process needed for scrutinising our financial wellbeing will be discussed with our unions appointed auditors when they have finalised their report. This will be the subject of a future communication.

It is reasonable to suspect that organising our 2021 Annual Delegate Conference will also come with significant challenges and our Executive Committee will be discussing these later in the year when the longer-term realities of the pandemic become clearer.
