TSSA Backing National Apprenticeship Week

5 February 2020

TSSA is giving strong backing to National Apprenticeship Week (3rd- 9th Feb) - celebrating the positive impact of apprenticeships on individuals, employers and the wider economy.

This week has seen the launch of the new Trade Union Official Apprenticeship.

This program combines work and learning, with training delivered via learning on the job and in the classroom.

TSSA has been at the forefront of the drive towards creating an Apprenticeship for Trade Union Officials. TSSA, as a sponsoring organisation, will soon begin hiring its own Trade Union Organiser apprentices from its own membership.

We recognise this is an important step for the movement to upskill current officers and staff, bringing new diverse talent into the movement to meet the changing needs of a complex working population.

TSSA is a core part of the apprenticeship trailblazer group which recognised the need for this new professional qualification, working alongside the Institute for Apprenticeships, other Trade Unions, the GFTU, Ruskin College and TUC UnionLearn.

The apprenticeships will provide an alternative route into becoming a trade union official, professionalise the role and bringing more talent into the wider movement with a greater pool of skilled people.

Sarah McConnell, TSSA HR Manager, said: “We are really pleased to see the Trade Union Official Apprenticeship taking off. TSSA wants to find and develop new talent, recruiting apprentices from the union’s own membership base who will undertake this new qualification whilst being coached by our current skilled Organising teams.

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, said: “I’m delighted our union has been at the forefront of the drive towards creating a Trade Union Official Apprenticeship

“This is a crucial step forward for us and the wider union movement. It’s about developing skills to grow so we can organise to win. I have no doubt this excellent scheme will prove highly popular and be integral to the future of the Trade Union movement.”
