TSSA Calls For Free Water and Healthy Foods On Public Transport

10 October 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has called for drinking water to be made freely available across public transport and healthy food options given greater prominence.

The intervention comes after a call from England's outgoing Chief Medical Officer - Dame Sally Davies – to ban snacking on public transport in a bid to end childhood obesity.

Cortes said: “It’s a no brainer that drinking water should be freely accessible across public transport as of right. The private train companies will always put profit first, but it’s surely not too much for them to ask to take this step.

“This could form part of a change in culture on public transport because we do need to see a significant move away from the prevalence of unhealthy snacking options – and move towards the provision of healthy meals.

“Childhood obesity is no laughing matter, it’s a public health issue and it’s important that train companies and others wake up to the fact and act.”
