TSSA Reaction To Scottish Parliament Vote On Ending ScotRail Franchise

2 October 2019

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has reacted with scorn to the result of a debate in the Scottish Parliament calling for ScotRail to be brought back into public ownership.

Scottish Labour – backed by TSSA and other rail unions – tabled the motion, urging the SNP Government to strip Abellio of the franchise by 2022 after it emerged that almost 75,000 ScotRail trains have been cancelled since the Dutch firm began running the franchise in 2015

The move not to extend the franchise was defeated after the SNP were supported by Tory MSPs.

Manuel Cortes said: “It’s clear to all and sundry that ScotRail are failing Scotland on a daily basis with this franchise. When will the SNP wake up to this and put the people of Scotland first rather than protect greedy shareholders?

“The nationalists have spent years trying to rid themselves of their Tartan Tory tag. Yet, today, in full public glare they have reverted to type. There is nothing remotely socialist about the SNP. They share the same pro-market DNA as the Tories.

“If you want to see public services run in the interests of their users and not greedy shareholders neither the SNP nor the Tories are for you.

“Only a Labour Government both at Holyrood and Westminster will deliver this on public rail. Jeremy Corbyn and Richard Leonard are the only socialist show in town.”
