TSSA Statement on South Western Trains engineering works

20 November 2018

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, released this statement in the light of Network Rail engineering works and disruption to SWR services in and out of London.

Commenting, Cortes said: “Engineering works are part and parcel of the railway and absolutely crucial in keeping the travelling public safe.

“Very few delays are caused by over-running engineering works but all too often problems arise when private companies fail to schedule the requisite time for Network Rail to take possession of the railway.

“Network Rail engineers must be able to carry out essential maintenance work which keeps passengers safe; this cannot be rushed by the pernicious desire of private companies to relinquish enough of the rail timetable to carry out the repairs.

“All too often the profit principle gets in the way of safety – something which would not happen under a publicly owned rail system.

“What have seen this week has been another startling example of a fragmented privatised rail system which is not fit for purpose.

“Public ownership would bring track and train together in an integrated way that allows greater flexibility, delivering essential maintenance and at the same time minimising disruption to passengers.”
