TSSA welcomes Labour leadership contest details and calls for unity "for a fairer Britain"

6 January 2020

Following confirmation of the Labour Party's leadership contest timetable by the NEC today, TSSA has welcomed certainty around the next steps. TSSA leader Manuel Cortes called for a new leader to bring unity to the party and "to keep fighting for the fairer Britain that we know is firmly within our grasp".

TSSA, which is affiliated to Labour, will decide which candidates it is backing later this month.

Manuel Cortes, TSSA General Secretary, said: “We welcome our Party's clear timetable to elect its new leader. There is no point in hiding the fact that December was a bitter blow for all of us who want to build a fairer Britain. However, we can't afford to dwell on our defeat as the fight to secure a better deal for the over 10 million people who backed Labour must go on.

“That's why we need a new leader in place who can unite our Party and our movement so we can stand up to the Tories and their divisive and unjust policies. It's in our DNA to keep fighting for the fairer Britain that we know is firmly within our grasp.

"Our own Executive meets later in January and will invite the candidates to meet with them before deciding which one they will back. Our union asks any candidate wanting the backing of our TSSA union to support public ownership of our railways without hesitation."

The leadership contest runs from 7 January to 2 April 2020 with the result expected on 4 April.
