Stop Violence Against Transport Workers
End Workplace Violence: Join TSSA’s Campaign for Safer Transport Workplaces
TSSA is taking a stand to end workplace violence against transport workers. Our new campaign is a response to a disturbing increase in assaults on staff, even as passenger numbers have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels.
Transport workers deserve to feel safe and respected while performing their essential duties. Violence, harassment, and abuse must never be considered “part of the job.”
What We’re Fighting For
To protect transport workers, TSSA’s campaign calls for:
- Government action: Ensuring existing protections are enforced and developing additional legislation to safeguard transport workers in England and Northern Ireland.
- A Transport Police force in Northern Ireland: Collaborating with the Stormont Executive to establish this much-needed resource.
- Zero-tolerance policies: Embedding these into Great British Rail’s practices to eliminate abusive behaviours.
- A joint charter against violence: A commitment from the Department for Transport and government to address workplace violence comprehensively.
- Employer accountability: Employers must implement robust reporting systems, support staff subjected to abuse and actively encourage reporting of assaults.
- Increased security: Boosting British Transport Police patrols across railways and the broader transport network.
Why this campaign is important?
We have been running a survey among TSSA members about the extent of workplace violence and sadly it’s very commonplace.
Workers across the transport sector have told us about how violence and abuse takes place on a daily basis, is not taken as seriously as it should be by employers and an over-burdened criminal justice system is letting transport workers down.
More and more, transport workers are finding themselves in compromised and incredibly unsafe situations. When violence does occur, this leads to workers needing to take increased time off, with incidents having huge implications for that persons’ mental health, well-being and family well-being.
All transport workers should be able to go to work and not face violence in their workplaces. Our campaign calls for additional action from employers and Government to make workplaces safer for good.
