TfL needs "support not cuts", says TSSA

27 May 2021

Ahead of tomorrow's expected Transport for London (TfL) funding announcement, TSSA calls for "support, not cuts" to bolster the country's recovery.

Manuel Cortes, TSSA General Secretary, said: “TfL needs support, not cuts. Our capital’s transport system cannot limp on with short term handouts. Businesses, staff and London’s communities are united in our calls for a long-term funding settlement which safeguards London’s transport services.

“As we emerge from the pandemic, we want and need people to use high quality public transport as part of our recovery – especially so if that recovery is to have a positive environmental impact. TfL is crucial to delivering that and has a proven track record of getting people out of their cars and onto public transport.

“The government only last week held TfL up as an example of how good integrated transport network can work, as part of the Williams-Shapps Plan for Rail. Cuts to TfL would throw all of that away and send a negative message about public transport for the rest of the country. We need a strong, supportive funding package to be announced tomorrow.”

TSSA is the biggest trade union in TfL with members across a wide range of operations and functions.
