Stepping Forward: My Experience on the WiL Course

Why I undertook the Women in Leadership course
My interest in becoming a Local Rep had been growing for some time, and I saw the programme as a chance to develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence I would need to take that step.
I was eager for two things: affirmation of my leadership abilities and a deeper understanding of labour laws and the labour movement.
The Most Valuable Lesson
The course opened my eyes to the incredible power women hold to create change, even in male-dominated spaces. I learned that I can lead while staying true to myself, and that being a feminist in such environments is not only possible but necessary.
Standout Moments
Mary, one of our guest speakers, made a lasting impression. Her passion for women’s rights and collaboration was infectious, and her history lesson on Sylvia Pankhurst was a joy to listen to.
Reflecting on My Leadership Style
I’ve always been a servant and hands-on leader, someone who likes to support and work alongside others. The course encouraged me to look at other leadership styles and consider what positive elements I could adapt into my own approach.
A New Perspective on Leadership
The biggest shift in my thinking was realising that we are all leaders but in different circumstances. Sometimes, leadership means adapting your skills to fit the situation. I now feel more empowered to be flexible, responsive, and effective in whatever leadership role I take on.
Putting It into Practice
Listening and critical assessment weren’t always my strongest skills. Since the course, I’ve been consciously working on both and I can already see how valuable they are for effective leadership.
Why Spaces Like This Matter
Women need safe spaces where we can meet, share experiences, and encourage one another. These environments give us the freedom to challenge ourselves and reaffirm our place in the workplace.
My Advice to Other Women
This course is an eye-opener. It’s unique, challenging, and, most importantly, safe. You’ll find yourself speaking openly about experiences and feelings with people you’ve only just met without shame or hesitation. If you get the chance to attend, take it.
Looking Ahead
The WiL course didn’t just give me new skills; it reaffirmed my determination to begin my journey as a Local Rep.
