Kings Speech signals end for rip-off rail

The Palace of Westminster

TSSA today welcomed the pledge in the King’s Speech to bring the railways into public ownership. This landmark commitment marks a significant victory for TSSA, which has been tirelessly campaigning for this cause since 1994.

The King’s Speech outlined plans by the Labour government to reform rail franchising, establish Great British Railways and bring train operators into public ownership.

TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust, said, “News that train operators are to be brought into public ownership, signaling an end to the rip-off rail privatisation by the Tories, will be welcomed by long-suffering passengers,

“Publicly owned rail companies will finally be free to run in the best interests of the passengers, rather than being treated like an ATM for shareholders.

“Keir Starmer is right to emphasise in the King’s speech that a publicly owned railway is good for the economy and a key driver of growth. Great British railways will be able to deliver the joined up thinking on fares and timetabling for which rail users have been crying out.

“Today’s announcements set the right tone for the future of Britain’s railways. For rail passengers, at long last, there is light at the end of the tunnel. We look forward to working closely with the government to ensure a smooth transition and develop a railway system that truly serves the public and transport workers alike.”
