Retirement of TSSA General Secretary

Former General Secretary Manuel Cortes has retired from the TSSA with effect from Monday 24th October. Frank Ward, formerly Deputy General Secretary, will be taking over as Interim General Secretary.

TSSA will be holding new General Secretary elections in early 2023.

Manuel has served for 11 years as General Secretary, having been elected in 2011 and again in 2016. He announced his intention not to stand for re-election in September 2022.

The election of TSSA’s new General Secretary has been postponed until the publication of the Kennedy Report to allow the candidates to explain to members how they will deliver on the report’s recommendations.

TSSA Interim General Secretary Frank Ward said “Manuel is a committed trade unionist and socialist who always worked tirelessly on behalf of our TSSA family. I’m sure he will continue to find ways of telling those in power when he sees them get it wrong and I wish him a long and healthy retirement.

“Leadership is about mobilising a group of people to jump into a better future. With the support of our fantastic members, I hope to use my short period as Interim General Secretary to start our union on that journey.”
