ScotRail's increased services not a 'green light' to ditch social distancing

As ScotRail services ramp up today, TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes has warned that this should not be seen as a "green light" to ditch social distancing.

The increase in rail services from 47% to 60% comes ahead of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s expected announcement on Thursday that Scotland will be moving to Phase Two of the easing of Lockdown.

However, Manuel Cortes warned: 

"More services on ScotRail’s tracks does not mean that it’s safe for the general public to start using the trains again. Nor should they be seen as a green light for people to ditch social distancing standards.

"Keeping a physical distance of at least two metres between passengers and/or staff at all times remains the most effective measure to control the spread of Covid-19.

"Our union is all too aware of the dangers of this pandemic to frontline transport workers – given the tragic death of Belly Mujinga and others. I do urge the public wherever possible to continue to work from home. The only people who should be on the trains right now are key workers who are keeping us safe during this pandemic."
