Spending Review - Transport Investment Fails to Impress

The Palace of Westminster

Maryam Eslamdoust, General Secretary of the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA), today issued the following statement in response to the 2025 Spending Review:

“The government’s Spending Review presents challenges and is disappointing for the transport sector. Transport is one of the few departments with a real terms cut in its expenditure limit over the five-year review period.

"While other sectors receive boosts- some in double digits - our transport system is being held back at a time when investment is urgently needed for climate, growth and regional connectivity.

“At a time when the UK is striving to boost regional connectivity, grow the economy, and meet its climate commitments, sustained and strategic investment in transport is more important than ever.

"We acknowledge the difficult choices facing government, but it's vital that transport is recognised as a key enabler of progress across a range of national priorities. From supporting green jobs to reducing emissions and improving public access to reliable services, the case for investment is clear.

"We urge ministers to consider the long-term impact of today’s decisions and to work closely with TSSA to ensure our transport network continues to serve communities, support economic growth, and meet the environmental ambitions we all share.”
