TSSA backs government over protecting bus routes

Transport and travel union TSSA has backed plans by the Labour government to protect bus routes across the country, with the union describing the measures as “essential” for communities and the economy.

The government’s Bus Services Bill, which passed its second reading stage in the House of Commons yesterday (2nd June), gives councils power to run their own bus services and promises to ‘end the plight [sic] of bus routes being scrapped at short notice.’

Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: “Buses are an essential service, and this is exactly what our Labour government should be doing in the name of not only protecting but building local communities across the country.

“For too long buses have been run for private interest rather than the public good in many places and the measures in this legislation will help make sure everyone has the ability to travel when needed, including disabled and other vulnerable passengers.

“Reliable bus services – and ones which link directly with our trains – are key to community wellbeing as well as economic growth, because they directly connect people.

“Hopefully we are seeing a turning point which takes us away from de-regulated services and we can build on the success of locally controlled bus networks such as those seen in Manchester.”
