TSSA backs Network Rail boss over Access for All

Rail union TSSA has welcomed comments from the boss of Network Rail, Sir Andrew Haines, who today told the Commons Transport Committee that a better strategy was needed to deliver the ‘Access for All Programme’ across the railways.

The programme aims to address the challenges faced by those who are disabled or have mobility restrictions when using stations.

Sir Andrew, NR’s Chief Executive, told MPs that ‘Access for All’ had delivered 27 schemes, believed to be the highest number ever, over a twelve-month period to date. However, he added there were several problems with the scheme and that “there is no strategy underpinning it” - “it is an area that is ripe for a more strategic approach.”

Responding, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust, backed the comments but highlighted the need for Ministers to go further and faster, saying: “Sir Andrew is right to highlight the ongoing importance of Access for All and we share his view that a more strategic approach is required to make sure everyone can use our rail network.

“Proper strategy must also mean proper funding from government and sadly in the past, under the Conservatives, we saw different stations bidding for much needed access improvements, subjecting those with access issues to something of a postcode lottery.

“Our union is deeply committed to making sure that passengers with mobility restrictions do not face social exclusion because train stations are not accessible.

“A railway fit for this century must give people with disabilities the same access as everyone else, right across the network and at all times.”
