TSSA calls on government to grasp the nettle over HS2 future

TSSA – the recognised union for HS2 staff – has called on the government to “grasp the nettle” over the high speed rail project in the light of a new report from MPs.

The Public Accounts Committee has slammed Rishi Sunak and his Ministers for the decision to scrap HS2’s northern legs, leaving only the route from London to Birmingham.

Commenting, TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust said: “We are clear that the Conservative government made the wrong decision in scrapping the vital northern legs of HS2.

“Instead, ministers should grasp the nettle and recognise that high speed rail is the only clean and green way to turbo charge our local, regional and national economies in the decades ahead.

“We are already a long way behind many other countries on high speed rail, from Japan to Spain. London to Birmingham must be built, but in reality that can only ever be a start.

“The Britain of the future will need HS2 not only across North but all the way to Scotland too – the long-term dividends would be immense.”
