TSSA comment on safety of TfL staff at work

TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust said:

“The rise in violent assaults against transport workers is completely unacceptable. No one should face violence or abuse simply for doing their job. Enough is enough.

"At TSSA, we have launched a campaign to eliminate violence against transport workers because too many of our members are experiencing horrific assaults and abuse. The government must act by increasing funding for British Transport Police so they can respond effectively to these incidents. Employers also have a duty to protect their staff by ensuring safe working conditions, including ending lone working practices that put transport workers at greater risk.

"The removal of ticket offices has only made things worse. These spaces double up as safety hubs for both staff and passengers, providing a visible and accessible point of support in stations. By closing them, transport workers and the public are at an even greater risk of violence.

"On top of this, the growing practice of deploying roaming transport workers—often working alone—has left staff even more vulnerable to attacks. Transport employers must take responsibility for the safety of their workforce. These workers keep our towns and cities running, and they deserve to be protected.”
