TSSA welcomes Starmer’s TUC commitments

Transport and travel union TSSA has welcomed the speech made by Keir Starmer to delegates at the Trade Union Congress in Brighton.

The Prime Minister said his government would ‘bring rail back into public ownership’ and also ‘repeal the 2016 Trade Union Act, get rid of Minimum Service Level legislation’ and end attacks on unions.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s remarks, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: “The government's commitment to public ownership of rail and repealing the draconian Trade Union Act of 2016 is certainly a step in the right direction and one that our members will welcome with great enthusiasm.

“While our union is excited by the prospect of the transformative changes being proposed we must ensure that the decisions made do not inadvertently harm hardworking individuals — particularly our transport workers, who kept society running during the pandemic.

“It’s vital that Labour recognises that transport workers must be properly remunerated and protected in the months and years to come. With that in mind we look forward to working with the Labour government and the Prime Minister to make their commitments a reality.”
