TSSA backs Railways Bill but calls for just transition to GBR

Rail union TSSA has described as a ‘significant step forward’ the introduction to Parliament of legislation which will formally create a new public body - Great British Railways (GBR), bringing passenger services under one roof.

The union believes the Railways Bill (being laid before Parliament today) marks a turning point away from the failed years of rail privatisation which began under the Conservatives in in the 1990s. TSSA has consistently campaigned for Britain’s rail network to return fully to public hands.

Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: “Our union welcomes this Bill and recognises it as a significant step forward. It is another turn decisively away from damaging decades of failed Tory privatisation.

“Our rail network is a precious asset – the driver of the British economy and the backbone of the nation. Clearly the Labour government is making good on commitments to return our railways to public hands.

“Great British Railways represents a golden opportunity to modernise the network, improve services for passengers and decarbonise the economy.

“However, what we must have in this legislation is a firm commitment to protect jobs, pay and conditions for all railways workers right across the board – whether in Network Rail or train companies.

“This means a fair and just transition to GBR for all rail workers because these are the people with the skills and experience to make the new era of public ownership a success.

“We also remain convinced that the best way forward is for all parts of our railways to be in the public hands – ending the vast profits made by freight and rolling stock companies. We will continue to make that case to Ministers.

“Also, in light of major concerns about safety on the network following the mass stabbing incident at Huntingdon, GBR must make a full investment in staff across the network.

“Lone working and unstaffed stations increase the chance of violence and antisocial behaviour – it's vital that rail workers and passengers have the protection needed.

“Our union is clear that British Transport Police must be fully funded and adequately resourced so they can keep the railways safe for everyone.”
