Rail union TSSA has branded Nigel Farage’s decision to trigger a by-election in his Clacton constituency as ‘end of the pier posturing’, with the union urging voters to reject the leader of Reform UK.

Farage – who will stand in the contest – has been facing intense scrutiny over his financial affairs in recent days, while Parliament’s Standards Commissioner is also investigating a gift of £5 million, received before he was an MP.

Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: “The decision to call a by-election and then stand as a candidate is a typical sleight of hand by Nigel Farage. It is amounts to nothing more than end of the pier show posturing.

“The people of Clacton badly need an MP who is on their side but in truth Farage has been all but absent as a local MP since being elected two years ago.

“Our efforts now will be full square behind the Labour Party in the fight for this seat – not least because a Labour victory would see an end to Farage's malign influence on British politics.”
