TSSA - ScotRail Minimum Fare Introduction Welcomed
TSSA has backed ScotRail’s new minimum fare policy which starts on Wednesday (1st July) aimed at tackling ticketless travel.
TSSA believes the move will reduce anti-social behaviour on Scotland’s railways as well as prevent fare evasion. However, the union is calling for an increase in the number of staffed booking offices - so passengers can buy tickets locally.
Commenting, TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust said: “Our union is fully behind ScotRail’s introduction of minimum fares because it will both prevent fare evasion and reduce anti-social behaviour.
“As a union we have long campaigned for measures which will lead directly to a reduction in anti-social behaviour across the network. Too often of late we have seen railway workers, our members, threatened and abused in the course of their duties.
“However, for this policy to work its vital we have staffed booking offices up and down the country, so passengers have the chance to buy tickets locally before travel. Also, British Transport Police must have the resources they need to undertake proper enforcement.”
