Glasgow Central fire again shows safety priority
Rail union TSSA has said the huge fire which has caused extensive damage to buildings adjoining Glasgow Central station demonstrates the importance of safety across the railways.
The blaze took hold on Sunday evening and continuing overnight, with properties evacuated and part of Union Street collapsing as fire crews fight to stop the blaze spreading to the station itself.
All train services at Glasgow Central have been cancelled for the time being.
Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: “Without doubt this terrible fire again shows the vital importance of safety across our rail network and all associated infrastructure.
“Investigations into what caused the blaze must be thorough, so this never happens again. While there’s clearly significant disruption to services at Scotland’s busiest station Network Rail have signalled that the station itself has not suffered significant damage.
“It’s terribly sad to see such an iconic part of Glasgow city centre destroyed by fire, however our union is thankful there seems to be no loss of life.
“Our members would have been working in and around the station and we pay tribute to them as well as members of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for their efforts under very difficult circumstances.”
