Government must invest to modernise rail system

TSSA, today, urged the government to prioritize investment in the UK’s rail infrastructure to modernise outdated systems and ensure a more reliable, efficient, and safe railway for passengers and staff.

The union spoke out after a fault in the railway’s radio communication system used by train drivers and signallers caused delays across the network.

TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust said: “Our railways are the backbone of the UK’s transport system, yet they are reliant on outdated and underfunded technology. The focus must shift to upgrading backend systems that underpin everything from signaling to communication. Without this investment, the rail industry risks falling further behind, compromising both efficiency and safety.”

Notes – TSSA is an independent trade union for the transport and travel industries. It is the recognized trade union for white collar, management, and skilled engineering, professional and technical trades in Network Rail. We have thousands of members right across the UK and Ireland, working for the railways and associated companies, as well as ferries, bus services and the travel trade.
