Transport and travel union, the Transport Salaried Staff’s Association, today welcomed Chancellor Rachel Reeve’s confirmation of the Government’s commitment to the East-West rail.

The Chancellor made these comments as part of a speech in Oxfordshire in which she pledged to go ‘further and faster’ to deliver the government’s Plan for Change to kick start economic growth.

TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust said: “the Government is right to make reviving the UK economy – which has stagnated for over 15 years – a  priority. In the long term, investing in growth will put pounds in people’s pockets and give this country a future it can believe in, creating new, high-skilled, better paying jobs to boost our economy.

“One of the best ways of doing this is investing in the green transport infrastructure of the future. Rachel Reeves’ re-commitment to the East-West rail, which the Government announced in the budget last year, is a very positive development.

“But the Government must go further and faster – with a comprehensive plan to upgrade the UK’s transport infrastructure and plug what the National Infrastructure Commission has called the ‘major gap’ left by the cancellation of HS2 Phase 2.

“Investment in the railways makes sound business sense, revitalising our economy and fighting climate change fit the years to come”

“After over a decade of low to no growth, lagging pay, and public services cut to the bone, we also need action to tackle the hardship people are feeling today. That means a plan to ensure that everyone has access to a decent quality of life by securing living standards in the here and now.”
