TSSA calls on MPs to oppose welfare reform bill

The Labour affiliated union TSSA has issued an urgent call to MPs across the House of Commons to oppose the government’s welfare reform Bill in a key vote later today.
The union, which had previously, said it wanted Ministers to ‘pause and reconsider’ the legislation, is clear the government has not gone far enough in allaying fears that greater hardships and poverty will be the result of the plans.
Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: "We urge all Parliamentarians to oppose the welfare reform bill. Pushing hundreds of thousands more into poverty is deeply dangerous after the long years of Tory austerity and a pandemic.
“Personal Independence Payments are a lifeline helping disabled workers to manage the costs of long-term ill health and participate in the workforce. Creating what would be a two-tier system and denying this support, and the health aspect of Universal Credit, to many is cruel, short sighted, and deeply unjust.
“This legislation has been rushed and badly thought out – it is not fit for purpose. We stand with disability and anti-poverty groups in strongly opposing this bill – MPs should do the same.”
