Transport and travel union TSSA has welcomed the election of Ivana Bacik as the leader of the Labour Party in Ireland.

Bacik was elected to the post unopposed. No other TDs put their name forward after the resignation of Alan Kelly.

The new leader immediately called for pay rises and a windfall tax to help workers address the escalating cost of living crisis.

Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes said: “Our union heartily congratulates Ivana on becoming leader of our Labour Party. It’s great to see her start as she clearly means to go on – stating that action must be taken to address the cost of living crisis.

“Ivana is spot on in saying that economic measures, including pay rises for workers and a windfall tax on energy companies who are making vast profits, must be implemented.

“It sounds to be like the workers of Ireland have a real champion who will back a pay rise, strengthen employee rights and collective bargaining. That is fantastic news.”
