TSSA welcomes Glasgow fire safety approach

Rail union TSSA has said it is pleased with the approach being taken by Network Rail and others in relation to the widespread fire next to Glasgow central station at the weekend.

The huge blaze on Union Street destroyed and damaged buildings but seems to have been brought under control before it could reach the station.

Glasgow Central is set to remain closed until next week at the earliest though some local services are running on the low level platforms.

Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said: “While we appreciate that no one wishes to see the such significant disruption to train services it’s clear the authorities, led by Network Rail, are doing the right thing in taking a safety-first approach.

“We are dealing here with a major incident at one of busiest stations across the land and there will need to be a full assessment of all infrastructure throughout the station before passengers can again use services.

“This may take time, but the work is absolutely necessary for the good of all. There can be no compromise on safety.”
