GWR: Timetable change Sunday 15th December

12 December 2019

Following the announcement from GWR that they plan to provide enhanced pay to certain groups of staff our Full time official has raised issues with the offer.

The offer

Unfortunately, before the company announced the enhancement, they chose not to engage with the trade unions before implementing it and it was issued as a fait accompli.

The offer itself is as follows:

“This enhancement will be paid to colleagues in collectively recognised grades within Stations, Drivers, Guards, On Board Service and Engineering. This arrangement will also apply to Customer Ambassadors and Duty Station Managers within stations.

This enhancement applies to all rostered or overtime turns booking on, at or after 0001 and until 2359 hours on Sunday 15 December.”

The total payment will be 2 X Base irrespective of normal Sunday payments.

TSSA requests

TSSA has both written to GWR and made verbal representations to improve the offer for it to cover all Management grades who start within the prescribed hours. Unfortunately, despite making both written and verbal representations to Matthew Golton he has advised that apart from those mangers identified in the communication, “normal arrangements will apply”. Effectively meaning that there is no plan to replicate the offer for most managers working that day.

2nd class citizens

This is further example of why GWR managers need to join TSSA to strengthen our numbers and help fight for parity and fairness with the other grades. I’m constantly reminded by Management members that there is little incentive to be a manager. If you wish to raise an individual grievance about this matter, then TSSA will of course support existing members to do this and will continue to champion the issues important to you. If you are willing to get active in TSSA to change the lot of managers then please contact Alan Valentine on and encourage your colleagues to Join us at
