News - Five years on - TSSA Remembers Stonehaven rail accident

Rail union TSSA has called for continued rail safety vigilance five years on from the Stonehaven rail crash which killed three people in Aberdeenshire.
Driver Brett McCullough, 45, conductor Donald Dinnie, 58, and passenger Christopher Stuchbury, 62 lost their lives when a ScotRail train struck a landslip and derailed at a bridge in Carmont, near Stonehaven, on August 12, 2020. Six others were left injured after the train hit debris from a drain.
Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust, said: “Today our union will take time to remember the impact on many lives of the Stonehaven rail accident.
“As ever, our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives or were injured in this tragedy. We remember too, the bravery of those in the railway industry and emergency services who rushed to the scene.
“Never a day goes by without our union placing safety as the top priority. Events like Stonehaven must not happen again and that means continued vigilance and the highest safety standards.
“Every single recommendation from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) report into this tragedy must be implemented without delay.”
The accident took place in the Carmont area, south of Stonehaven and was ScotRail’s 06:38 Aberdeen – Glasgow Queen Street train. The derailment was reported at around 09:45am
